This modernisation process will consequently contribute to reduce traffic congestion across Mauritius to the benefit of the population in general.
The Prime Minister, Mr Pravind Kumar Jugnauth, made this statement, this afternoon, in Phoenix, during the inauguration of the Dowlut flyover, which is now operational.
The Vice-Prime Minister, Minister of Education, Tertiary Education, Science and Technology, Mrs Leela Devi Dookun-Luchoomun; the Minister of Land Transport and Light Rail, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration and International Trade, Mr Alan Ganoo; the Minister of Environment, Solid Waste Management and Climate Change, Mr Kavydass Ramano; the Minister of National Infrastructure and Community Development, Mr Mahendranuth Sharma Hurreeram; members of the National Assembly; and other personalities were also present on that occasion.
In a statement, the Prime Minister expressed satisfaction that major infrastructure projects in the region, namely the Jumbo, Pont Fer and Dowlut flyovers, have been completed. He highlighted that these major projects have, and will greatly contribute to reduce traffic congestion in this area, especially during peak hours.
The Dowlut flyover, pointed out Prime Minister Jugnauth, will enable those vehicles coming from Port Louis to directly access Phoenix without having to drive up to Highlands roundabout and back, while vehicles from Valentina now benefit from a dedicated lane to access the motorway.
He reiterated that there is, through these flyovers, a definite enhancement of the road network. Furthermore, he observed that there are ongoing projects geared towards road decongestion in other regions of the country, and commended all stakeholders involved in such projects.
These projects, he stressed, are in line with Government’s vision to further ease traffic around Mauritius through modern infrastructures. The Prime Minister also acknowledged that these projects contribute to considerably reduce costs associated to traffic congestions, which, according to a study, amounts to several billion rupees.
He also urged the population to be cautious on the roads, and ensure that their vehicles are in good conditions, so as to reduce the number of accidents across the country.
