The government of Mauritius is enhancing youth recreation and infrastructure in Panchavati, as demonstrated by a recent mini sports day organized by the Sugar Industry Labour Welfare Fund. The event featured various activities for children and was attended by key ministers who emphasized the importance of balancing academics with physical activities and improving local infrastructure.

A mini sports day for children, organised by the Sugar Industry Labour Welfare Fund as part of the ongoing school holidays, took place yesterday at the Panchavati Community Centre, followed by a prize-giving ceremony. The event brought together children from the region to participate in a variety of fun activities, including races, musical chairs, spoon-and-marble contests and bottle-filling games, all aimed at promoting active and healthy lifestyles.
The prize-giving ceremony was attended by the Minister of Tertiary Education, Science and Research, Dr Kaviraj Sharma Sukon; the Minister of Public Service and Administrative Reforms, Mr Lutchmanah Pentiah; and the Member of the National Assembly, Dr Sandeep Prayag.
In his address, Dr Sukon welcomed the initiative, noting that it offers children a valuable opportunity to engage in sports during the holidays. He stressed the importance of striking a balance between academic pursuits and physical activities, encouraging youngsters to remain dedicated and bring pride to their community.
Minister Pentiah, for his part, reaffirmed Government’s commitment to enhancing infrastructure in the region, with particular emphasis on creating spaces that support hobbies and recreational activities for young people. He also underscored the need for improved transport facilities to ensure easier access to the centre, while calling for collective efforts to foster social progress.
As for Dr Prayag, he highlighted the necessity for further infrastructural development in Panchavati, pointing out that the area is currently served by a single access road. He indicated that plans are being considered to develop an additional route to improve connectivity and facilitate growth in the region.
Following the event, a site visit was conducted at Gandhi Square in Rivière du Rempart in the presence of the Minister of Land Transport, Mr Osman Mahomed, along with the other dignitaries, to assess infrastructural needs and explore improvements to bus services for the benefit of inhabitants.
