The construction of the Grade Separated Junction at Wooton is expected to be completed by July 2024, announced the Minister of National Infrastructure and Community Development, Mr Mahendranuth Sharma Hurreeram, yesterday, as he carried out a site visit to take stock of the progress achieved.
A site visit at the Hermitage Bypass which is still under construction, also followed. In a statement after the site visit, Minister Hurreeram expressed satisfaction as regards the level of progress achieved in the construction of the Grade Separated Junction at Wooton.
He recalled that the contract was allocated in August 2022 and construction works kickstarted in September 2022 and are on the right track of progress.
The Minister pointed out that the existing Wooton roundabout is used by up to 5000 road users during peak time in the morning and up to 4500 road users in the afternoon, adding that queuing along the motorway extends over 1km during peak hours.
With this project, for which a budget of Rs 390 million has been earmarked, Government aims to decongest the existing traffic jam, provide safer and rapid connections to adjoining towns and villages, stated Mr Hurreeram.
Furthermore, he explained that the upgraded infrastructure will enable free flow movement between the North and South along the Motorway; reduce travel time and vehicle operating costs; improve accessibility to adjoining regions; reduce traffic congestion at the main entrance to Curepipe and allow traffic from Curepipe, Quartier Militaire and other adjoining regions to access the motorway freely.
The Minister recalled that the upgrading and construction of road infrastructure as part of the Road Decongestion Programme, is being undertaken across the island, to improve road security and safety for all road users as well as to improve road connectivity and accessibility to all regions of the island.
As regards, the Hermitage Bypass, for which a budget of Rs 275 million has been allocated, the Minister informed that the project is being implemented following the increase in traffic flow in the nearby region due to the increasing number of residential areas and the newly construction of the National Wholesale Market at Wooton.
He added that the project includes the construction of a new road over an approximate length of 2.2 km comprising of a bypass of 1.5km from Aurea Morcellement to the existing Cote D’or Road (B48) near Belle Rive and the upgrading of approximately 700m of existing B48 road to Belle Rive Roundabout on B6 road.
