Africa-Press – Mauritius. The Minister of Health and Wellness, Dr Kailesh Kumar Singh Jagutpal, inaugurated a new Health Caravan specialised in HIV/AIDS screening, today, at the Vagrant Depot Sub Office of the Ministry of Health and Wellness in Grand River North West.
In a statement, Dr Jagutpal highlighted that this new Health Caravan is part of a project launched back in 2011. The Health Caravans have enabled the screening of more than 34 000 persons around the island as well as the detection some 40 positive HIV/AIDS positive cases, indicated the Minister.
He recalled that the purchase of this caravan was already announced in budget 2019-2020, and it will now be used to carry out screening all around Mauritius.
Furthermore, Dr Jagutpal underlined that there are currently some 11 000 persons in the country who live with HIV/AIDS and are receiving treatment, which is taken care of by the Ministry of Health and Wellness, so as to have better quality of life.
This caravan, to the tune of some Rs 8,5 million, has been inaugurated at a time where the Ministry’s activities are increasing, despite the COVID-19 pandemic.
Its main objective is to carry out HIV/AIDS screening around the island, but however, it will also offer syphilis and hepatitis C screening facilities.
The new Health Caravan, which will be able to accommodate eight patients at a time (four in the lobby and four others for screening), will also be used to raise awareness, especially among the youth, and for sensitisation campaigns on HIV/AIDS.
