Africa-Press – Mauritius. The High Commissioner of Mauritius with residence in Washington DC, Mr Purmanund Jhugroo, presented his Letters of Credence to the President of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana, Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali, on 14 November 2023 at the Office of the President in Georgetown, Guyana.
Mr Jhugroo also had a bilateral meeting with the President and the Prime Minister, Brigadier Mark Phillips. In a statement, Mr Jhugroo highlighted that he was honoured to be accredited as the High Commissioner of the Republic of Mauritius to Guyana and thanked the President and the Prime Minister for the warm hospitality.
He conveyed to them the greetings of the President of the Republic of Mauritius, Mr Prithvirajsing Roopun, and the Prime Minister, Mr Pravind Kumar Jugnauth. Mr Jhugroo underlined that Mauritius is keen to explore avenues of cooperation with Guyana for the mutual benefit of both peoples.
The following issues were also on the agenda: an early signature of the Double Taxation Avoidance Agreement between Mauritius and Guyana; visa waiver for Mauritian nationals travelling to Guyana; as well as the potential collaboration in the sugar sector and the blue economy.
As for the President of Guyana, he recalled the common historical and cultural diversities of the two countries. Dr Ali emphasised his Government’s commitment to address climate change and environmental concerns with clean energy.
For his part, Prime Minister Philips stated that Guyana has a gas energy project that would generate some 300 megawatts of power by 2025. His country’s goal, he added, is to achieve 70% of its energy requirement from hydro power and 20% from solar power by 2030.
