Africa-Press – Mauritius. A delegation comprising twelve Members of the Parliament and serving the Zambian Parliamentary Committee on Media, Information and Communication Technologies, met the Minister of Information Technology, Communication and Innovation, Mr. Darsanand Balgobin, today, at the Sicom Tower in Ebène.
During the meeting, Minister Balgobin dwelt on various aspects that contributed to the progress of the ICT sector in Mauritius. He observed that fibre and broadband connectivity, as well as strong networks such as 5G, are key elements for any ICT-related development.
Mauritius, he stated, is fully covered with Internet at 99% and 5G services have been launched in several regions. He informed that there are also 140 e-government services and around 500 free Wi-Fi spots are available to the public.
The Minister further spoke of the Cybersecurity and Cybercrime Act 2021 which takes into consideration the fast-changing nature of the ICT ecosystem and provides for a modern piece of legislation in line with Budapest Convention and Malabo Convention.
Initiatives such as the National Cyber Incident Response Plan and the Security Operations Centre as well as implementation of legal frameworks, he added, have played an important role in the ranking of Mauritius at the first place in Africa and 17th globally in the International Telecommunication Union Global Cybersecurity Index.
Minister Balgobin also mentioned the Mauritius Digital Promotion Agency Bill which will revamp the NCB, boost the growth of the sector through skills development and promote an ICT culture among the population.
The meeting was followed by a working session with the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mrs S. Valère-Bolli, along with officers of the Ministry, the National Computer Board (NCB), and the Computer Emergency Response Team of Mauritius.
The delegation is currently on a study tour to the Mauritius National Assembly from 30 April to 07 May 2023. They will also have a guided visit at Le Morne Cultural Landscape during their stay.
