Africa-Press – Mauritius. The Book entitled ‘Dhaliah Family in Mauritius – A line of descent’ was launched this afternoon, at Noah Centre, Jinfei Smart City, in Riche Terre, in the presence of the President of the Republic of Mauritius, Mr Prithvirajsing Roopun, who was the Chief Guest at the launching ceremony.

The co-authors are Mr Erranah (Dev) Dhaliah and Mr Pradip Sen. The Parliamentary Private Secretary, Mr Rajanah Dhaliah, and also the brother of Mr Dev Dhaliah, members of the Dhaliah family, and other personalities were present.

The book, which will not be on sale, contains factual details of the struggle for settlement and gradual prosperity of the Dhaliah Family in Mauritius from the very beginning. The founder of the Dhaliah family reached Mauritius as an indentured labourer in 1865.

In his address, the President expressed appreciation for having been invited to be part of this very special and memorable event which coincides with the commemoration, today, of the 187th anniversary of the arrival indentured labourers to Mauritius which he recalled is a public holiday and was marked with a wreath-laying ceremony at the Aapravasi Ghat UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The 2nd of November is a very important day for many Mauritians and on this solemn day we should have a duty and a moral responsibility to remember our forefathers, he emphasised.

Mr Roopun spoke about the importance to preserve our culture and to pay tribute to all those who have helped in keeping the diversity of cultures in Mauritius alive. The President moreover praised the laudable work accomplished by Mr Dev Dhaliah.

The book narrates the history of every Mauritian and all citizens have to proud of their journey and that of their forefathers since their arrival on the island, he stated. From generations to generations, Mauritians have achieved progress and for that it is necessary to pay homage to our ancestors, he added.

The Parliamentary Private Secretary, for his part, congratulated Mr Dev Dhaliah for having co-authored the book and paid tribute to his work leading to the publication of the book which will be remembered by the future generations.

In his speech, Mr Dev Dhaliah, observed that choosing the 2nd of November for the launch of his book is a way to pay tribute to his ancestors who came to Mauritius as indentured labourers.

He recalled that indentured labourers came to Mauritius in 1834 and were sent to work at Antoinette sugar estate where his ancestors were likewise sent to work.

He highlighted his pledge in undertaking a project to remember his ancestors and their bygone eras in a quest for a better life and prosperity and the project took the form of a book.

He also expressed gratitude to his wife, his brother, the staff of his office, family members and key partners for their contribution and support in making the book a reality.
