Africa-Press – Mauritius. The Mauritius Malayalee Association (MMA), in partnership with the High Commission of India in Mauritius, hosted a cultural extravaganza at the Indira Gandhi Centre for Indian Culture, last evening in Phoenix, to commemorate Kerala Piravi Day 2023.
The event was graced by the presence of Shri V. Muraleedharan, Minister of State for External Affairs and Parliamentary Affairs of India, and Special Representative of the Prime Minister of the Republic of India.
Among the distinguished guests in attendance were Mrs. Nandini K. Singla, the Indian High Commissioner to Mauritius, and other notable figures. The primary objective of this event was to celebrate the birth of Kerala as an Independent State within the Republic of India, while also symbolising the burgeoning friendship between Mauritius and India.
In his statement, Shri Muraleedharan extended gratitude to the Government of Mauritius for working in close collaboration with India and the efforts deployed in promoting Indian culture.
He fondly described Mauritius as a “home away from home” and commended the island nation’s dedication to preserving and nurturing the Indian cultural heritage.
The Indian Minister of State moreover hailed the commemoration of Kerala Piravi Day as a historic milestone, marking the first-ever celebration of that Day in Mauritius.
He expressed hope for further fruitful cooperation between the two nations in the future. Furthermore, Shri Muraleedharan emphasised the global significance of promoting the Hindi language and Indian culture. He shed light on the Indian Government’s commitment in establishing India’s place on the global stage and supporting the global recognition of Hindi.
The Indian Minister of State also highlighted the aim of his two-day visit in Mauritius which includes engaging with various officials and stakeholders in the country, and extending a hand of friendship and support on behalf of the Government of India.
He likewise praised the enduring relationship between both nations and expressed his joy at celebrating Aapravasi Diwas as Special Guest of the Government of Mauritius on Thursday 02 November 2023 at the Aapravasi Ghat in Port Louis.
Kerala Day, also known as Kerala Piravi, marks the historic formation of the State of Kerala in southern India on 1st November 1956. This important date signified the amalgamation of three major provinces and various outlying regions under diverse rulers into the unified State of Kerala, well after India’s Independence.
