Africa-Press – Mauritius. Some 74 residents from Trèfles, Plaisance, Rose-Hill, Camp Levieux, and the vicinity benefitted from free eye screening, on Saturday 01 April 2023, at Rolande Hungley Multipurpose Hall, in Plaisance.

The initiative was a joint collaboration of the Ministry of Social Integration, Social Security and National Solidarity, and the National Empowerment Foundation.

The objectives of this exercise were to, namely: provide free and high-quality eye screening services to vulnerable citizens; raise awareness among the community as regards the importance of eyesight and detection of any visual impairment and; ease the cost of these services for the families.

The Minister of Social Integration, Social Security, and National Solidarity, Mrs Fazila Jeewa-Daureeawoo, was present at the launching of this activity.

Speaking on the occasion, Mrs Jeewa-Daureeawoo dwelt on the importance of doing eye screening exercises as well as other medical screening exercises to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

This screening exercise, she said, is very important as it enables to identify potential eyesight problems, and hence treatment can be provided at the earliest possible stages.

According to her, deprived populations often have less awareness regarding the diseases they might be suffering from as well as preventive strategies regarding their illnesses.

The Free Eye Screening will therefore provide vulnerable families with free guidance regarding eyesight issues, she pointed out. On this score, the Minister called upon the inhabitants of the region to avail themselves of the facilities being put at their disposal.
