Africa-Press – Mauritius. Some 166 beneficiaries residing at Plaisance, Trèfles, Camp Levieux, Rose Hill, and the vicinity benefitted from free medical screening, on 08 October 2022, at Plaisance Community Centre, Rose Hill.

The initiative was a joint collaboration of the Ministry of Social Integration, Social Security and National Solidarity, the Ministry of Health and Wellness, and the National Empowerment Foundation.

The objectives of the free medical screening were to provide free and high quality medical services to poor and vulnerable people and to raise awareness among the community.

Through medical screening, the presence of risk factors of a disease can be detected thus enabling earlier treatment especially for those who are not likely to seek medical attention.

The services provided included: General consultation (BP check, Blood Glucose, Body Mass Index and Counselling); Dental Consultation; Breast and Cervical Cancer screenings; HIV, Hepatitis C and Syphilis screenings; Diabetes screening test; and distribution of water bottles, fruits, masks and medicinal plants.

Present on the occasion, the Minister of Social Integration, Social Security and National Solidarity, Mrs Fazila Jeewa-Daureeawoo, highlighted that the free medical screening exercise will be carried out regularly throughout the country for the wellbeing of the beneficiaries under the Social Register of Mauritius as well as the inhabitants of the region.

She announced that a series of medical screening has been planned, as from the month of October 2022 till June 2023, in all the nine districts. This screening exercise, she said, is very important as it enables to identify potential health problems and hence treatment can be provided at the earliest possible stages.

Government is laying emphasis on prevention of diseases so as to limit a lot of human sufferings, she added. Mrs Jeewa-Daureeawoo appealed to the population to carry out regular screening as it can help detect a disease at an early stage and thus they can be treated more easily.

According to her, deprived population often have less awareness regarding the diseases they might be suffering from as well as preventive strategies regarding their illnesses. The Free Medical Screening will therefore provide the vulnerable families free guidance regarding their health issues, she pointed out.

Speaking about the five pillars adopted by Government to address the problem of poverty, she recalled that they are financial support, education, training, housing, and family values.

However, she also underlined the importance of health to support these five pillars. Without health, one cannot study, work, and look after one’s family, she said.
