Africa-Press – Mauritius. Robert Lewandowski tore his hamstring to miss Poland’s UEFA EURO 2024 opener against the Netherlands this weekend, the country’s football body confirmed on Tuesday.

In a statement, the Polish Football Association said Lewandowski, 35, suffered a “torn biceps femoris muscle” and would be ineligible to play in Poland’s first match on Sunday, while national team doctor Jacek Jaroszewski said medical staff “are doing everything” so he could play in the second fixture against Austria on June 21.

The Barcelona star picked up the thigh injury during a 2-1 win against Türkiye in Monday’s friendly ahead of the EURO 2024, which will begin Friday in Germany.

Lewandowski has been a Poland forward since 2008 and has scored 82 goals in 150 international appearances.

In EURO 2024 Group D, Poland will respectively play against the Netherlands, Austria, and France.
