Africa-Press – Mauritius. Government is introducing a programme in the school curriculum comprising breathing techniques, age appropriate postures and healthy eating in its quest to cater for the health and wellness of citizens and reduce risk factors and the prevalence of non-communicable diseases among the population.
The President of the Republic of Mauritius, Mr Prithvirajsing Roopun, made this statement today during the official ceremony held at the Aapravasi Ghat World Heritage Site, in Port-Louis, to mark the 8th International Yoga Day.
The ceremony was organised by the High Commission of India in collaboration with the Ministry of Arts and Cultural Heritage. International Yoga Day is observed annually on 21 June and the theme this year is “Yoga for Humanity.
” The High Commissioner of India to Mauritius, Mrs K. Nandini Singla, and other personalities were present. In his address, President Roopun expressed gratitude to the High Commission of India for organising the event.
The celebration of the International Yoga Day at the historic place, the Aapravasi Ghat, depicts the close and longstanding ties that exist between India and Mauritius, he added.
The President indicated that yoga is an Indian practice believed to have existed prior to the Vedas. He also highlighted that the Indian Government has put in a lot of efforts to ensure that yoga is proclaimed as an international day by the UN General Assembly in 2014.
Yoga, he said, has been acclaimed for decades as a spiritual discipline bringing harmony between mind and body and is useful to mitigate mental and physical stress.
He pointed out that it has proved to be very effective in dealing with isolation during the COVID-19 pandemic. The President encouraged the population to embrace yoga as a lifestyle for a peaceful and harmonious society.
Prime Minister Jugnauth, he recalled, has recently announced the construction of an AYUSH Center of Excellence in Côte d’Or, a state-of-the-art traditional treatment hospital, which will be highly beneficial to the population.
President Roopun also announced the setting up of an ayurvedic garden at the State House with the assistance of the Indian High Commission. For her part, Mrs Singla dwelt on the benefits of yoga in helping to build resilience, immunity and well-being among the population.
A Guardian Ring, she indicated, has been created to mark the 8th International Yoga Day in some 75 countries starting from Japan to New Zealand, as part of the ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’ initiative.
She expressed gratitude to the Government of Mauritius in being steadfast and for providing support to the Indian High Commission in promoting yoga in Mauritius. She further stressed on the importance of introducing yoga in schools for the well-being of children.
