Africa-Press – Mauritius. The International Organisation for Migration (IOM) Regional Director for Southern Africa, Mr Charles Kwenin, paid a courtesy call on the Minister of Land Transport and Light Rail, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration and International Trade, Mr Alan Ganoo, this morning, in Port-Louis.
The Maputo Diaspora Declaration, adopted at the sixth Ministerial meeting of the Migration Dialogue for Southern Africa (MIDSA), held in Maputo, Mozambique, from 25 to 28 October 2021, was one of the main focus of discussions between Minister Ganoo and the Regional Director for IOM Southern Africa.
Under the Maputo Diaspora Declaration, explained Mr Kwenin, African countries could consider bilateral labour exchanges under the International Recruitment Integrity System (IRIS), with a view to respecting and protecting the rights of migrant workers, and ensuring that the recruitment of migrant workers is done following international standards.
The IRIS is a consortium of international stakeholders committed to the fair recruitment and selection of migrant workers. The development of a regional migration programme was also discussed with the Minister.
Mr Kwenin stated that IOM stands ready and is willing to support its Member States in applying international standards, in accordance with the IRIS. The aim is for Governments to carry out international recruitment under the appropriate standards and engagement of diaspora, in a way which is conducive to creating an enabling environment.
He underlined that while the IOM discussed with, and remained guided by, Governments, the International Organisation would advise and provide technical support and assistance to the Member States. The IOM Regional Director for Southern Africa commended Mauritius too for already adhering to international migrant management practices.
He indicated that the IOM highly values the relationship with the Government of Mauritius, and requested the latter to consider being a champion of migration in accordance with the Global Compact of Migration (GMC).
The Global Compact is the first inter-governmentally negotiated non-binding agreement, prepared under the auspices of the United Nations, covering all dimensions of international migration in a holistic and comprehensive manner including States’ sovereign right to determine who enters and stays in their territory and their commitment to international cooperation on migration.
