Africa-Press – Mauritius. A signature ceremony between the University of Toamasina, Madagascar, and the International Slavery Museum (ISM) was organised, yesterday, at ISM Mauritius Ltd, in Port Louis in the presence of Mr.

Jean-Maxy Simonet, Chairperson of ISM Mauritius Ltd, Dr. Jimmy Harmon, ISM Board Director and Vice Chairperson of the Scientific Committee, Professor Diny Razanakolona, President of the University of Toamasina and other eminent personalities.

This partnership between the two institutions committed to justice, tolerance, and education is set to pave the way for a better future cooperation On that occasion, Mr. Jean-Maxy Simonet recalled the harrowing experiences of the Malagasy people during the dark era of slavery.

He underscored the joint commitment of ISM Mauritius Ltd and University of Toamasina to combating all forms of discrimination, outlining the fundamental objective of their alliance.

For his part, Dr Jimmy Harmon, highlighted the intertwined histories of Mauritius and Madagascar at that time. He added that during the Dutch and French colonial periods in Mauritius, 68% of the enslaved population were hailed from Madagascar, demonstrating the historical connection.

Furthermore, Professor Diny Razanakolona, emphasized the geographical and historical bonds between Mauritius and Madagascar. He stated that the collaboration aims to strengthen these existing ties, with a focus on research, history, geography, and cultural exchange.

The partnership foresees a future founded on mutual understanding and a shared heritage. ISM Mauritius Ltd was set up as a Special vehicle on 20 January 2020 and was incorporated as a Government owned company for the implementation of the Intercontinental Slavery Museum Project.

Its objective is to facilitate cultural exchange, peace, and unity among people from diverse continents. This entails promoting curriculum development, conducting research, producing educational materials, and studying Indian Ocean slavery and the slave trade.
