Africa-Press – Mauritius. The Ambassador of Italy to Mauritius, Mr Paolo Cuculi, met with the President of the Republic of Mauritius, Mr Prithvirajsing Roopun, this morning, at the State House, in Réduit.

In a statement after the meeting, Mr Cuculi highlighted that the meeting with the President was very positive and cordial. Discussions, he underlined, focused on international politics and bilateral relations between Mauritius and Italy.

The Italian Ambassador indicated that the meeting also enabled them to dwell over the situation post COVID-19 and its impact on the population of both countries as well as on the region.

“We also talked about several avenues of cooperation that could help our two countries to overcome all these historical emergencies such as the sanitary and economic crisis, and the issues related to climate change and international conflicts,” he pointed out.

Mr Cuculi underlined that they also spoke of the potential of the financial sector, the blue economy, bilateral and multilateral cooperation, and respect for international law as a preferred choice to strengthen our societies as well as regional and global stability.

“I informed the President of the interest of Italy to reinforce the relations with Mauritius through the establishment of a new Honorary Consulate of Mauritius in Milan, which is the economic center of Italy,” the Ambassador stated.

The extension of the competence of the Italian Institute of Culture in South Africa to Mauritius so as to bring more Italian culture to Mauritius and the perspectives to relaunch the Italian touristic flow in Mauritius as it was before the COVID-19 pandemic were also at the forefront of discussions, Ambassador Cuculi highlighted.

Mr Paolo Cuculi entered the Italian diplomatic service in 1992, working in the Directorate General for Personnel. In 1994, he was appointed Second Secretary for Trade in Khartoum, and in 1997 he moved to the Embassy in Bangkok as First Secretary.

In July 2000, he was appointed First Secretary at the Italian Mission to the Conference on Disarmament in Geneva. After returning to the Ministry in 2002, he served in the Directorate-General for Political, Multilateral and Human Rights Affairs.

Starting from 2006, he has been First Counsellor at the Mission to the United Nations in New York, during Italy’s two-years term as Member of the United Nations Security Council.

Since 2010 he served first as First Counsellor, then as Minister Plenipotentiary, at the Mission to the United Nations in Geneva, during Italy’s three-year term as Member of the UN Human Rights Council.
