Africa-Press – Mauritius. The Embassy of Japan in Mauritius handed over, yesterday during an official ceremony in Port Louis, two new ultrasound machines and a seven-seaters vehicle to the Non-Governmental Organisation Mauritius Family Planning Association (MFPWA), in the presence of the Vice-President of the Republic of Mauritius, Mr Marie Cyril Eddy Boissezon.
The Minister of Commerce and Consumer Protection, Dr Marie Christiane Dorine Chukowry, the Ambassador of Japan to Mauritius, Mr Shuichiro Kawaguchi, and other personalities were also present on this occasion.
This project benefits from Japan’s official development assistance programme, Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP). The Grant was allocated to the NGO for “The Project for Provision of Ultrasound Machines for Gynaecological and Abdomen Screening and Vehicle” and amounts to some Rs 3.1 million.
The project aims at increasing the early detection of diseases such as breast cancer, cervical cancer and prostate cancer. With this Japanese assistance, the NGO will be able to: provide gynaecological and abdomen screening services to more people; and visit and provide more services including emergency interventions in various localities.
It is recalled that GGP is a small-scale assistance scheme offered by the Government of Japan since 1989. It provides financial support to non-profit organisations for implementing projects aimed for economic and social development at the grassroots level in the areas such as health, education, and poverty relief.
