Africa-Press – Mauritius. The Minister of Industrial Development, SMEs and Cooperatives, Mr. Soomilduth Bholah, effected a site visit, this morning, at Aremo Co. Ltd, a manufacturer of jewellery parts and finished jewellery for exports, in Goodlands.
The Director of the Fashion and Design Institute, Dr Sabrina D. Ramsamy-Iranah, was present on the occasion. In a statement, the Minister underlined the importance of effecting site visits in manufacturing companies to take stock of the various phases of production.
He added that he is impressed by the various units of production as well as the manufacturing and operation processes implemented at Aremo Co. Ltd. Mr Bholah indicated that set up since 1981 as a family business, Aremo Co.
Ltd is ranked 3rd in terms of exports in the jewellery sector. Exports from the enterprise generated some Rs 2.6 billion in 2020, and Rs 4 billion in 2019.
The Minister recalled that there are currently 12 main companies operating in the jewellery sector, employing some 940 people. The jewellery sector, he said, still has bright prospects and can tap into various opportunities. On that note, he reiterated the unflinching support and assistance of Government to the sector.
Mr Bholah also underlined that the Ministry and other relevant stakeholders, including the FDI and the Mauritius Institute of Training and Development, will cater for solutions to address challenges faced by the jewellery sector, such as the lack of skilled and trained employees.
He pointed out that the Director of the FDI took stock of the various issues faced by the jewellery sector during the visit and will consider providing training to ensure availability of adequate labour supply of all skill levels.
