Launching of a one-day induction course for some 73 new Medical Health Officers

Africa-Press – Mauritius. A one-day Induction Course for some 73 new Medical Health Officers was launched, this morning, by the Minister of Health and Wellness, Dr Kailesh Kumar Singh Jagutpal, at Dr Abdool Gaffoor Jeetoo Hospital in Port Louis.

The opening ceremony was attended by the Senior Chief Executive of the Ministry of Health and Wellness, Mrs Devi Chand Anandi Rye Seewooruthun; the Director General Health Services, Dr Bhooshaun Ori; the Chairperson of the Medical Council of Mauritius, Dr Harrish Reesaul; and other personalities.

In his address, the Minister emphasised Government’s commitment to enhance the capacity of the healthcare workforce, including the medical cadre which comprised a total of 1,758 practitioners with 1,209 Medical and Senior Medical Health Officers, and 117 Pre-Registration House Officers.

The Minister gave a brief overview of the Induction Course, with a focus on delineating the duties and responsibilities of doctors, covering medico-legal aspects of practice, ethical and professional behaviour, human resource practices, and other pertinent areas.

The Health Minister pointed out the critical role that the 73 new recruits would play, serving as vital support to the existing medical workforce. He listed the essential qualities such as dedication, commitment, and merit required by these Officers as part of their responsibilities.

Highlighting the nobility of the medical profession, Minister Jagutpal called on the new doctors to adhere to strong moral principles, to deliver their duties with unwavering honesty and dedication, and to maintain a positive attitude at work.

He stressed the importance of proper patient care, including accurate record-keeping and diligent patient monitoring. He stated that effective communication with patients and their families was essential for comprehensive healthcare.

Moreover, Dr Jagutpal urged the new doctors to pursue career advancement and professional growth, underlining the obligatory Continuing Professional Development (CPD) for doctors to stay updated, remain eligible for practice, and secure their place on the Medical Council of Mauritius’ annual registry.
