Africa-Press – Mauritius. French President Emmanuel Macron called for the integration of Mayotte, a French department, into the Indian Ocean Commission (COI) during the fifth COI summit in Antananarivo, Madagascar. He advocated for a pragmatic approach despite Comoros’ opposition to Mayotte’s inclusion.
Macron emphasized the importance of including Mayotte and its inhabitants in COI programs, highlighting France’s significant financial contribution to the organization. He suggested a pragmatic path towards integration, not necessarily immediate full membership.
The Comoros, however, reiterated its opposition, maintaining its claim to Mayotte’s sovereignty. The Comoros contests France’s control over Mayotte, which remained French after the Comoros gained independence in 1975. This dispute is a long-standing point of contention.
Mayotte’s strategic location in the Mozambique Channel, a key maritime transport route with significant hydrocarbon reserves, fuels the ongoing geopolitical rivalry. This strategic importance adds complexity to the debate surrounding its integration into the COI.
Macron defended his proposal, asserting that Mayotte’s French status is a result of the Mahorais people’s choice, referencing past referendums. He aimed to counter misinformation and what he perceived as attempts to justify contemporary imperialism and conflicts, referencing Russia’s stance on the issue.
