With a view to maintaining public order and safety, the Minister of Finance, Economic Planning and Development, Dr Renganaden Padayachy, presented a series of measures in the Budget 2023-2024 to continuously invest in, and support, the public forces. Hence, the Budget provides an amount of Rs 11.8 billion to the Police Force to create a safe environment for the citizens.
The break-down of this sum, as indicated by Dr Padayachy, is as follows: Rs 375 million for the construction of the Mauritius Disciplined Forces Academy at Côte D’Or to provide a modern and up to date training platform for the Police, Prison and Fire and Rescue Services; Rs 330 million for the acquisition of a new offshore patrol vessel; Rs 125 million to renew the fleet of vehicles of the Police Force; Rs 50 million for the installation of a new coastal surveillance radar system; and acquisition of noise cameras and light armoured personnel carriers to improve the operational capabilities of the Police.
In addition, some 1,000 police officers will be recruited while 833 police officers will be promoted. The Minister also announced the construction of Satellite Fire Stations at Bambous Virieux, St-Pierre, Chemin Grenier, La Gaulette, Bambous, Grand Bois, L’Escalier and Bel-Air to assist fire services in rapid intervention.
Crusade Against Drug Trafficking According to the Finance Minister, Government remained committed to take decisive actions to combat drug trafficking through coordinated and sustained efforts. To that endeavour, it would continue to provide support to law enforcement agencies by investing in appropriate and modern equipment.
These will include vehicle and security equipment for the Anti-Drug and Smuggling Unit (ADSU); and high patrol vessels for the National Coast Guard to track illicit activities on the high seas.
