Africa-Press – Mauritius. turquoise waters and white beaches made world famous by two postage stamps: the red and the blue Mauritius. Hindus, Muslims, Buddhists and Christians have lived peacefully together here for centuries, the term “multicultural” could have been invented on the island.
Breathtaking underwater world
Mauritius is not only beautiful above water, but also under water. The reefs that surround and protect the island are habitat for a wide variety of animals and plants.
The German oceanographer Yann von Arnim goes diving here on behalf of the Mauritian Ministry of Culture. The sprightly gentlemen who hang around in the various caves on the coast would also like to salvage something: barrels with diamonds, doubloons and gold bars.
Countless stories entwine around the pirate treasures that are said to be buried in Mauritius. And some of the treasure hunters have invested their entire fortune in the search for clues.
On Mauritius’ neighboring island Rodrigues, 600 kilometers away, life is even more pristine than on the main island. Tomorrow after morning they set out here, the “piqueuses”, the squid piercers.
They walk to the coast for two hours. The bus is too expensive for them. Then they are taken to the reefs by boat to hunt squid with spears. And in the evening the catch is hung to dry in front of the front door.
