Mauritius and Réunion Strengthen Ties with Six New Agreements

Africa-Press – Mauritius. The second session of the Mauritius-Réunion mixed commission, co-chaired by Mauritian Foreign Minister Ritesh Ramful and French Delegate Minister Thani Mohamed Soilihi, concluded with the signing of six agreements. Five bilateral accords and one complementary agreement, specifying the status of the Caisse centrale de coopération économique in Mauritius, were finalized. The meeting, held at the Government Hotel, reinforced the strong ties between the two islands.

The Mauritian delegation included several ministers and representatives from public institutions and the private sector. Both co-chairs emphasized the fruitful discussions and the existing robust relationship between Mauritius and Réunion. The agreements cover various sectors, including the blue economy, maritime security, and education.

The mixed commission stems from a 2011 agreement signed during a visit by then-Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam to Réunion. This second session focused on addressing shared challenges faced by island states, such as biodiversity and climate change. The ministers highlighted the practical cooperation between the islands, particularly during times of crisis, such as recent cyclone assistance.

Discussions also touched on Ramgoolam’s proposal for a regional economic zone, with both sides expressing support. Soilihi suggested drawing inspiration from existing models, such as the European Union, while acknowledging the need to harmonize standards and regulations.

Finally, the French Delegate Minister addressed the cancellation of French President Emmanuel Macron’s official visit to Mauritius, attributing it to the Pope’s passing. Soilihi assured that the visit is merely postponed and a new date is being arranged, underscoring Macron’s commitment to visiting Mauritius.
