Mauritius has signed an In-Principle Memorandum of Understanding to join the SIDS Platform, a global initiative aimed at promoting solar energy deployment in Small Island Developing States. This partnership with the International Solar Alliance and the World Bank Group will facilitate large-scale solar projects, reduce energy costs, and enhance the country’s renewable energy capacity.

The Ministry of Energy and Public Utilities will support and sign an In-Principle Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for Procurement under the Small Island Developing States (SIDS) Platform which is a joint initiative of the International Solar Alliance and the World Bank Group. The objective is to facilitate aggregated and efficient large-scale solar energy deployment.
The SIDS Platform, spearheaded by the International Solar Alliance in partnership with the World Bank Group, is a global initiative designed to help Small Island Developing States accelerate the adoption of solar photovoltaic (PV) systems and battery storage solutions. It achieves this through mechanisms such as aggregated demand, standardised procurement processes, and coordinated financial and technical support.
The project seeks to address key structural challenges commonly faced by island economies, namely limited market size and high investment risks. By pooling demand and resources, the Platform generates economies of scale, reduces procurement costs, and enables faster and more efficient implementation of renewable energy projects.
By joining the SIDS Platform, Mauritius is expected to benefit from several strategic advantages. These include cost optimisation through competitive and aggregated e-procurement processes, as well as enhanced fiscal stability driven by lower energy costs and increased competition among renewable energy providers. The initiative will also contribute to reducing the country’s reliance on diesel and limit exposure to global fuel price volatility.
Furthermore, participation in the Platform will support Mauritius in meeting its Sustainable Development Goals and climate commitments, while strengthening national capacity through access to knowledge-sharing tools and technical expertise. Improved data-driven energy planning is also anticipated, allowing for more informed and sustainable decision-making in the energy sector.
This initiative underscores Government’s continued commitment to advancing renewable energy adoption and strengthening energy security, while positioning Mauritius as an active participant in global efforts to combat climate change.
