Africa-Press – Mauritius. Following Mauritius’ municipal elections, the selection of mayors and deputy mayors is underway. In Curepipe (“Ville des Fleurs”), the ruling Alliance du Changement is expected to secure the mayoral seat, with the deputy mayor position going to the opposition.
The Alliance is aiming for a proportional distribution of positions reflecting each party’s representation. The PTR and MMM are expected to fill the mayoral and deputy mayoral positions across the five cities.
In Curepipe, potential candidates include Dr. Vicky Naga (PTR) for mayor and an MMM candidate from Ward 4 as deputy mayor. Alternative options include Harsha Beeharee (PTR) and Kris Caullee (MMM). The low voter turnout (73% abstention) has sparked reactions.
Padma Utchanah (Ralliement citoyen pour la Patrie) interpreted the abstention as a strong signal of public disapproval towards the government, linking it to anger towards both previous and current administrations.
Junior Minister Rajen Narsinghen, however, highlighted the renewed regional democracy after ten years, suggesting improvements to encourage voting, potentially including fines for unexcused absence.
Narsinghen acknowledged the Alliance du Changement’s significant victory (117 seats) and urged collaboration between elected officials and the central government to address the poor state of the cities.
He called for innovative ideas, diversified funding sources, and greater autonomy for municipalities. Kushal Lobine (Nouveaux Démocrates) celebrated the Alliance’s win and the ND’s first municipal election success, emphasizing the need for immediate action to improve the cities’ conditions.
The low voter turnout is a significant concern, with differing interpretations. While some view it as a rejection of the government, others highlight the need to reform electoral participation.
The focus now shifts towards addressing the challenges facing the cities and fulfilling the promises made during the election campaigns. The new municipal councils will need to demonstrate their capacity to deliver on their pledges and restore public trust.
