Africa-Press – Mauritius. Mauritius PM Pravin Kumar Jugnauth will conclude his week-long visit to India today. The meeting sought to strengthen the Comprehensive Economic Cooperation and Partnership Agreement (CECPA) signed between the two countries in 2021.
Under it, the two countries expanded their trade and economic partnership in the areas of solar power, petroleum, and infrastructural developments. India’s exports to Mauritius of $670 million have been the highest since 2005 which indicates their strengthening trade relationship.
Trade between the two countries is achieved by the maritime connectivity in the Indian Ocean Region. The PM also discussed the increased necessity of maritime security in the region vis-a-vis China.
Mauritius joined as a member of the Colombo Security Conclave (CSC) last month. The PM’s visit is the perfect time to strengthen the framework of CECPA with CSC.
India’s military base in the Agalega island of Mauritius is an important surveillance location to counter China’s naval expansion in the region. Hence, increased trade and export to Mauritius can provide avenues for India to increase its naval footprints in the maritime region. The meeting will likely enhance this relationship to improve the maritime safety, trade, and connectivity of the Indian Ocean Region islands.
