Africa-Press – Mauritius. ‘In unapparelled adversity, a key advocacy is to stand united in renewed solidarity to weather a human and economic onslaught by harnessing the power of collective action. Mauritius is determined to contribute its fair share to building a better world and do so with humility and conviction’.
This was the gist of the message of the Prime Minister, Mr Pravind Kumar Jugnauth, to members of the diplomatic corps, during a gathering held, this afternoon, at the New Treasury Building, in Port-louis.
Prime Minister Jugnauth welcomed new Heads of mission and Ambassadors and underpinned the purpose of the gathering, which is to celebrate the bilateral relationship that Mauritius share with various countries.
He renewed the pledge of the Government to work together with its partners for a safer, greener and a more sustainable world. The Prime Minister dwelt on the various adverse events that Mauritius as well as the rest of the world have had to face during this year.
As regards the Covid-19 pandemic, he observed that with the implementation of stringent preventive and control measures, Mauritius is today ‘Covid-safe’, and the key objective of Government is to ensure an early access to safe and effective affordable vaccines.
While reiterating his profound gratitude for all bilateral assistance and donations received since the outbreak, Prime Minister Jugnauth solicited funding support from development partners to procure the much-needed vaccines.
Moreover, he expressed gratitude to the various forms of assistance received in the implementation of the action plan to remove Mauritius from the European Union’s list of high-risk countries allegedly having strategic deficiencies in their anti-money laundering and counter terrorist financing frameworks.
Speaking about the wrecking of the Japanese bulk carrier, the MV Wakashio, he underlined the support from friendly countries through the deployment of specialist teams and equipment to help deal with the subsequent oil spill.
In addition, the Prime Minister recalled that Mauritius is prepared to enter a long-term arrangement with the United States to ensure that it is able to continue its operations in Diego Garcia.
The Prime Minister also called upon for the support of friendly countries to back up Mauritius’s candidature to be a member of the UN security council, which showcases our willingness to be part of the collective effort to advance the cause of humanity.
He concluded by reiterating that in these challenging times the Government recognises that collaborating with partners is key, especially those who know us value us and trust us.
‘We will continue to work towards enhancing bilateral relations with friendly counties, which is a key fundamental of our foreign policy’, he said.
