In a statement, Minister Jagutpal highlighted that the May Measurement Month is a global campaign led by the International Society of Hypertension to sensitise the population on the need to check their blood pressure.
He pointed out that increased access to blood pressure screening will help individuals to take preventive measures and to reduce hypertension’s adverse effects on health.
He further pointed out that hypertension is related to several health issues such as heart disease, stroke and cardiovascular complications. The prevalence rate of hypertension is 27.2% in the adult population in Mauritius, he also added. May Measurement Month
May Measurement Month, launched in 2017, is a global BP screening awareness campaign to increase the numbers of participants aged 18+ who are regularly getting their BP checked and to give people the tools to understand how this information can contribute to knowledge about individual health.
It also provides diet and lifestyle advice to those with BP in the hypertensive range and to facilitate improved follow up for sufferers. More than 100 countries participate in this campaign annually.
