Africa-Press – Mauritius. Negotiations for mayoral appointments in Mauritius’ five municipalities have begun following the recent municipal elections. The components of the ruling Alliance du Changement are positioning themselves for these coveted positions.
Commenting on the high abstention rate, Tourism Minister Richard Duval stated that while the turnout was low, the Alliance secured a decisive victory, emphasizing the competence of their newly elected councilors.
Duval made these remarks during a ceremony commemorating his father, Sir Gaëtan Duval. He praised his father’s contributions as a lawyer and politician, highlighting his exceptional character and commitment to the people.
He further indicated that the three elected representatives from constituency No. 17 (himself, Ajay Gunness, and Michael Sik Yuen) will actively support Curepipe’s councilors, citing a significant backlog of fifteen years.
Responding to questions about the upcoming mayoral elections and the Nouveaux Démocrates’ aspirations, Duval indirectly confirmed their interest in securing the Curepipe mayoral position.
He indicated that discussions with the Alliance leadership would determine the allocation of mayoral positions and that the ND’s partnership within the Alliance would be a factor in the decision-making process.
The statement highlights the ongoing political maneuvering within the Alliance du Changement as it prepares for the mayoral elections. The high abstention rate and the ND’s expressed ambition for the Curepipe mayoralty indicate significant political factors at play.
The emphasis on addressing the backlog of issues in Curepipe showcases a key priority for the party. Duval’s personal reflections underscore a continuity between his party’s history and its current political trajectory.
