Africa-Press – Mauritius. A Memorial Monument in honour of Late Sir Anerood Jugnauth (SAJ), GCSK, KCMG, QC, was unveiled, this afternoon, at the SSR Botanical Garden in Pamplemousses, marking one year of his demise.

The former President and Prime Minister of the Republic of Mauritius, passed away on 03 June 2021 at the age of 91. Born on 29 March 1930, SAJ became one of the most remarkable and respected politicians of the country by serving twice as President of the Republic, and six times as Prime Minister.

On this occasion, the Prime Minister, Mr Pravind Kumar Jugnauth, accompanied by his spouse, Mrs Kobita Jugnauth, and Lady Sarojini Jugnauth, offered their prayers in the memory of SAJ.

Several Ministers and dignitaries also paid their homage at the Memorial Monument erected near the samadhi of SAJ. The ceremony was marked by an unfurling of the portrait of SAJ.

In addition, a photo exhibition retracing the highlights of the personal life and achievements of the tribune, was also organised at the Château Mon Plaisir.

Political career of SAJ SAJ served as President of the Republic of Mauritius from 2003 to 2012. He was elected six times as Prime Minister, as follows:

• 1982-1995: Prime Minister, Minister of Defence, Home Affairs and External Communications

• 2000-2003: Prime Minister, Minister of Defence, Home Affairs and External Communications

• 15 December 2014 to 14 March 2016: Prime Minister, Minister of Defence, Home Affairs, Minister of Rodrigues

• 14 March 2016 to 26 May 2016: Prime Minister, Minister of Defence, Home Affairs, Minister of Rodrigues, Minister of Finance and Economic Development

• 26 May 2016 – 21 December 2016: Prime Minister, Minister of Defence, Home Affairs, Minister of Rodrigues

• 21 December 2016 to 23 January 2017: Prime Minister, Minister of Defence, Home Affairs, Minister of Rodrigues and National Development Unit & External Communications

SAJ started his career as a lawyer and began his political career with an election into the Legislative Council into 1963 as a candidate of the Independent Forward Bloc for Pamplemousses/Rivière du Rempart. In 1965, he attended the Constitutional Conference in London to discuss matters pertaining to the independence of the country.

He became the Queen’s Counsel in 1980 and the Grande Croix de l’Ordre de la Pleaide in 1984 and was also honoured as the First Class Order of the Rising Sun (Japan) in 1988, Dr Honoris Causa, University of Aix-en-Provence in 1985 and Grand Officier de l’Ordre de la Légion d’Honneur (France) in 1990.

SAJ will be remembered for his remarkable contribution in shaping the political, socio-economic and cultural landscape of Mauritius. He has been a pioneer in the relentless fight for the decolonisation of the Chagos Archipelago and in promoting the welfare of the Chagossian community.
