Message to students for SAJ's birthday: watch out for politicization!

Africa-Press – Mauritius. Whether teachers, unions and even students, many are wondering why a message on the occasion of the 93rd birthday of the late Sir Aneerood Jugnauth (SAJ) was read in all primary and secondary schools on Wednesday March 29 . In this message, we can read excerpts such as “. . .

SAJ removed our country from the clutches of poverty in 1982”, or, “the economic and social transformation of Mauritius in the 1980s under the leadership of SAJ”, or, “his determining contribution in Lancaster House where the independence of Mauritius was being discussed in 1965”.

Without mentioning the names of other politicians who also contributed to this stage in the country’s history. Is this a political move? Why is it only SAJ who is presented in the message as “father of the Republic of Mauritius”? Why is Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam (SSR), who was also “father of the nation”, not entitled to such a tribute on his birthday?

“In general, we have activities on history. Today, it is necessary to know if the same thing will be done during the anniversary of SSR in September, for example.

If this is not the case, well, then everyone will see the political aspect of this approach. Me, I propose that we have extensive history lessons in schools for that, ”reacts historian Jocelyn Chan Low.

For his part, the red MP Mahend Gungapersad, who deals with the education file, indicates that we must also recognize the contribution of SSR and not indulge in political recovery.
