Africa-Press – Mauritius. Foreign delegates, who participated from 17 to 19 October 2022, in a conference on migration in Mauritius, undertook a metro trip, yesterday, from the Victoria Metro Station to Quatre Bornes Metro Station.
The Minister of land Transport and Light Rail, Minister of Foreign affairs, Regional Integration and International Trade, Mr Alan Ganoo, and the Chief Executive Officer of Metro Express Ltd, Mr Das Mootanah, were present.
In a statement, Minister Ganoo recalled that delegates from Southern African countries were in Mauritius to participate in a migration conference organised by the International Migration Office (IOM) in collaboration with the Prime Minister’s Office, the Ministry of Foreign affairs, Regional Integration and International Trade, and the European Union.
He rejoiced that the foreign delegates expressed their interest to visit the light rail public transport system in Mauritius. He highlighted that the project represents a major achievement for Mauritius recalling that Phase 2C, from Phoenix to Curepipe, was recently inaugurated.
Minister Ganoo further highlighted that the Metro Express project, a prestigious and ambitious one, is being implemented so as to modernise the public transport sector of Mauritius.
The Metro Express, he pointed out, is a comfortable, reliable, safe and environmentally friendly alternative mode of transport. He expressed hope that the light rail system in Mauritius will inspire other countries to implement such a project, which he said, brings a lot of development in its wake.
The Regional Director for Southern Africa, IOM, Mr Ashraf El Nour, for his part, dwelt on the migration conference and stated that the forum enabled participants to discuss on new commitments and Sustainable Development Goals as regards migration and to formulate a programme that builds on different initiatives that reach out to the diaspora.
He also congratulated the Government of Mauritius for its successful management of the COVID-19 situation while observing that the tourism industry in Mauritius has presently an 80% recovery rate. He also pointed out that Mauritius is a migration success story.
