Africa-Press – Mauritius. The first working session of a series of sessions of the Mindful Governance Programme, aiming to promote good governance as a benchmark for accountability, efficiency and success, was held, this afternoon, at the SICOM Tower, in Ebène.
This programme is an initiative of the Ministry of Financial Services and Good Governance, in collaboration with the Mauritius Institute of Directors (MIoD) and the Geroudis Law Firm.
The sessions of some 12 to 15hrs will comprise practical scenarios to work on questioning and decision-making processes, and corporate governance code and scorecards.
Representatives, in particular directors sitting as board members, of several parastatal as well as public bodies such as the Mauritius Housing Company Ltd, the State Trading Corporation, and the Wastewater Management Authority, participated in the event.
In a statement after the session, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Executive Director of the MIoD, Ms Sheila Ujoodha, highlighted that this programme, also known as the Mindful Governance Series, had been launched by the MIoD because with time and the introduction of multiple regulations and legislations in companies and jurisdictions, good governance had become a mere area of compliance.
“Governance,” she observed, “is present in companies and institutions to enhance the quality of service instead of being considered as another process or checklist for the sake of adjustment.
” “It is in this context that we are embarking on this programme with the parastatal and public sector as it is essential to raise awareness on corporate governance among directors,” Ms Ujoodha said.
Furthermore, the CEO indicated that today’s session focused on how good governance can add value to a company, whether public or parastatal, and how to put the sector the participants work for in perspective.
The session also pertained to their roles as director on a board in context and what commitments were expected from them as a director on such boards.
