Africa-Press – Mauritius. The Minister of Industrial Development, SMEs and Cooperatives, Mr Soomilduth Bholah, effected site visits, today, at the Firemount Textiles Ltd and FM Denim Co.Ltd, and the Compagnie Mauricienne de Textile (CMT) Ltd at the La Tour Koenig Industrial Zone. The aim is to identify bottlenecks, discuss ways forward, increase resilience and strengthen Government’s support to the industry.

In a statement, Minister Bholah indicated that his Ministry is constantly meeting with export companies dealing in textiles and clothing, fish and fish preparations, jewelry, chemicals, medical devices, and leather and effecting site visits to take stock of the situation to respond to challenges and identify new opportunities to reorient the sector for sustained development amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

He deplored a shortage of manpower as the main reason for a slowdown in productivity in the manufacturing sector adding that most enterprises are turning to smart and advanced technologies related to Industry 4.0.

However, he pointed out the need for enterprises to have skilled labour to ensure smooth business operation. The manufacturing sector, Mr Bholah stated, is an important pillar of economic growth as suggested by its contribution to employment and foreign exchange earnings.

In order to instil a new dynamism and propel the sector to higher productivity, his Ministry in collaboration with the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development, developed an Industrial Policy and Strategic Plan (2020-2025) for Mauritius, he added.
