Africa-Press – Mauritius. In the context of activities marking the International Day of Cooperatives, the Minister of Industrial Development, SMEs and Cooperatives, Mr Soomilduth Bholah, effected a site visit, today, at the sugarcane fields owned and managed by Medine Camp de Masque Cooperative Credit Society in Mont Ida.
In a statement, Minister Bholah highlighted that the visit aims to give a boost to the work being done by the Cooperative Society engaged in sugarcane plantation while valorising the efforts of planters during the harvest period.
The Minister reiterated that Government is providing several facilities as stipulated in Budget 2023-2024, such as an increase in the minimum guaranteed price of sugar from Rs 25,000 to Rs 27,500.
He encouraged sugarcane planters not to abandon their land and to avail of all the schemes being put at their disposal. The increase in sugar prices across the world will help to bring more revenue to the country, stated the Minister.
Furthermore, he indicated that the first Cooperative Movement was created in 1913 in the sugarcane sector, and underlined that the Medine Camp de Masque Cooperative Credit Society has around 350 members. In Mauritius, there are around 120 cooperative societies engaged in sugarcane sector and regrouping some 6,600 planters, he added.
