Africa-Press – Mauritius. The Minister of Labour, Human Resource Development and Training, Mr Soodesh Satkam Callichurn, inaugurated, today, the new Labour Office of Triolet. The Deputy Director of Labour, Mrs S.Jeetoo, and other personalities were also present on this occasion. In his address, Minister Callichurn highlighted that the new office offered more space and a better working environment to the Labour and Industrial Relations Officers.
“This,” he pointed out, “will enable them to be more efficient and carry out their duties in optimum conditions.
He observed that the number of complaints in the region was on the rise and reminded that the priority of the Ministry had always been the welfare of workers.
As such, the reforms brought about with the Workers’ Rights Act bear testimony to Government’s commitment to protect workers from any abuse and ill-treatment.
Furthermore, the Minister seized this opportunity to commend all staff of each Labour Office around the island for the support and counsel they provided to workers from various sectors. He called upon each Labour and Industrial Relations Officer to master the Workers’ Rights Act so as to be even more effective in the future.
The Labour Minister, moreover, reminded that the Portable Retirement Gratuity Fund, the Wage Guarantee Fund, and the Redundancy Board were all introduced under the Workers’ Rights Act back in 2019.
He also indicated that the National Tripartite Council was set up under provisions of the Employment Rights Act in a bid to consolidate dialogue between employer, employee, and other stakeholders in the field of work.
It is noted that the Triolet Labour Office receives an average of 300 visitors monthly and has registered more than 500 complaints from workers of the region since January 2023 to date.
