Minister Ganoo highlights elaboration of a National Human Rights Action Plan 2023-2030

Africa-Press – Mauritius. The elaboration of a National Human Rights Action Plan 2023-2030 and a Universal Periodic Review Report was highlighted, today, by the Minister of Land Transport and Light Rail, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration and International Trade, Mr Alan Ganoo, during the first 2023 National Mechanism for Reporting and Follow-up meeting (NMRF) held at the Council Chamber of the Municipal Council of Port Louis.

The Permanent Secretary of the Human Rights Division of the Ministry, Mrs Zahira Bibi Auladin Auckburally, and the Chairman of the Mauritius Council of Social Service (MACOSS), Mr Suraj Ray, were present.

The meeting, chaired by Minister Ganoo, was organised by the Human Rights Division under the aegis of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration and International Trade.

It brought together NGOs to discuss issues pertaining to enabling Mauritius fulfilling its treaty obligations under international human rights conventions.

The NMRF is a platform enabling the country to effectively meet its requirements regarding the timely reporting to the international and regional human rights systems, the implementation of obligations under the various international instruments, as well as the follow-ups of recommendations, through better coordination and collaboration among relevant stakeholders.

Addressing the stakeholders, Minister Ganoo pointed out that consultations have already started for the implementation of a National Human Rights Action Plan 2023-2030 which will chart the way forward as a roadmap for the Republic of Mauritius to uphold human rights.

The Action Plan, he indicated, will include key elements such as the implementation status as regards human rights; proposed actions at the level of each institution; estimated costs and implementation date; constraints encountered; and measures in relation to Sustainable Development Goals.

Minister Ganoo also spoke of the elaboration of a Universal Periodic Review Report which is to be submitted in October 2023. To this end, he invited all NGOs to submit proposals by 14 April 2023 to the MACOSS so that these inputs are taken into consideration in the drafting of the Action Plan and the Periodic Report. He underlined that the MACOSS will act as a facilitator to disseminate information regarding human rights.
