Africa-Press – Mauritius. The Minister of Land Transport and Light Rail, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration and International Trade, Mr Alan Ganoo, inaugurated, yesterday during an official ceremony, the Bambous Traffic Centre.
The Chairperson of Black River District Council, Mr Ludovic Labeauté, the Chairperson of Bambous Village Council, Mr Ashwin Kumar Suneechur, as well as other personalities were present at the event.
In his address, Minister Ganoo highlighted that this traffic centre will cater for the increasing number of buses operating in the region and provide better services to the inhabitants of Bambous.
He pointed out that this project, to the tune of some Rs 14,7 million, was completed after some two months and comprises of, among others, bus shelters, lighting facilities, and elevated footpaths for pedestrians.
He recalled that several traffic centres have been inaugurated in several other regions around the island and that this bears testimony of Government’s commitment to enhance the quality of life of citizens.
He also provided details regarding some other projects such as La Vigie – La Brasserie – Beaux Songes link road; the Flic-en-Flac Bypass; the upgrading of the road to access Chamarel; the building of a market place for the inhabitants of Bambous; and the construction of 275 housing units in La Valette.
Speaking about the negative effects of climate change on the environment, the Minister reminded that some Rs 2 billion have been earmarked in the last budget for the acquisition of 200 electric buses so as to lower the country’s carbon footprint.
Moreover, Minister Ganoo underlined that the National Land Transport Authority (NLTA) Disciplinary Committee has been set up to listen to any disciplinary proceedings against holders of a licence or permit issued by the NLTA in a bid to better protect commuters.
As far as the Fleet Management System project is concerned, Mr Ganoo indicated that it which will enable the NLTA to monitor the movement of every bus across the island, through an operations centre.
The use of Global Positioning System will thus enable the Road Traffic Commissioner and his staff to effectively track all buses in real time with a view to provide a better service to the population, he added.
The Minister also seized this opportunity to recall that the Metro Express project as well as other projects undertaken by Government aim at further developing the country and ensure the well-being of the whole population.
