Africa-Press – Mauritius. It was a great honour for Mauritius to have the Prime Minister, Mr Pravind Kumar Jugnauth, participate in the G20 Summit along with world leaders, upon the personal invitation of the Prime Minister of the Republic of India, Shri Narendra Modi, stated the Attorney General, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration and International Trade, Mr Maneesh Gobin, during a press conference held this afternoon in Port-Louis.
He underlined the privilege of Mauritius’s participation as a guest country in the G20 Summit that was held from 09 to 10 September 2023 in India, and spoke about its outcomes for the country.
Minister Gobin pointed out that in its capacity as Guest Country, Mauritius was able to attend all meetings that were held since 01 December 2022 and that will be ongoing up to November 2023.
As regards the outcomes of the participation of Mauritius, the Foreign Affairs Minister highlighted that Mauritius as a representative of the African Union, was able to proudly represent the organisation during the Summit.
Furthermore, he indicated that Prime Minister Jugnauth was able to attend the official launch of the Global Biofuels Alliance by the Indian Prime Minister, a proud moment for Mauritius, the country being among the founding members.
In addition, Mr Gobin stated that the Summit was an unprecedented platform whereby the voice of Small Island Developing States was represented by Mauritius, and the Prime Minister was able to raise concerns regarding issues such as food security, climate change, and consequences of geopolitical tensions.
Furthermore, the Foreign Affairs Minister dwelt on the various bilateral meetings Mr Jugnauth had on the sidelines of the Summit. He informed that the unique bilateral relations that India and Mauritius share, were demonstrated in the fact that the Indian Prime Minister had his first bilateral meeting with Mauritius on 08 September 2023.
During their meeting, Prime Minister Jugnauth reviewed all the ongoing cooperation projects, infrastructural development initiatives, and the various Memoranda of Understanding signed between the two parties.
He added that the Prime Minister Jugnauth congratulated the Prime Minister and the people of India for the successful Chandrayaan-3 mission. As for PM Jugnauth’s meeting with the President of the United Arab Emirates and Ruler of Abu Dhabi, Mr.
Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the Minister informed that Mauritius sought collaboration in the energy sector, whilst the finalising of the Bilateral Air Service Agreement and innovative technologies were at the core of discussion during his talks with the President of the Republic of South Korea, Mr.
Yoon Suk Yeol. Mr Gobin also indicated that PM Jugnauth spoke about the Chagos Archipelago issue and reviewed the progress made as regards the rounds of discussions being held between the two countries during a bilateral meeting held with the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Mr.
Rishi Sunak. Prime Minister Jugnauth, he added, also met with other dignitaries including the President of the Republic of France, Mr. Emmanuel Jean-Michel Frédéric Macron.
