Africa-Press – Mauritius. The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration and International Trade, Mr Maneesh Gobin, was at the head of the Mauritian delegation which participated, yesterday, via video conference, in the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Council of Ministers Extraordinary Meeting.
The meeting was held under the presidency of Angola which is the current SADC Chair. The Council of Ministers Extraordinary Meeting, preceded by the Senior Officials Meeting on 26 September 2023, was attended by 14 SADC Member States.
Matters discussed during the meeting pertained to the modalities for restoring peace and security, including the possible deployment of a SADC Standby Force, in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), which is facing a complex conflict situation.
The Council agreed that the matter will be further discussed at a meeting of the SADC Organ Troika on Peace, Defence and Security Cooperation (Angola, Zimbabwe and DRC) which will be scheduled shortly.
It was further agreed to hold a meeting of those SADC Member States which will send troops to DRC on 03 October 2023, in addition to the holding of a face-to-face Extraordinary Summit at the earliest possible.
