Africa-Press – Mauritius. The professionalism, hard work and determination of public officers were commended by the Minister of Public Service, Administrative and Institutional Reforms, Mr Teeruthraj Hurdoyal, today, at the Ravenala Attitude Hotel in Balaclava.

He was speaking at the opening of a one-day workshop focusing on the theme “Impact of disruptive technologies on public service delivery to meet the Sustainable Development Goals”. The workshop is being organised in the context of the United Nations (UN) Public Service Day observed each year on 23 June.

The UN Resident Coordinator to Mauritius and Seychelles, Mrs Lisa Simrique Singh; the Secretary for Public Service (SPS), Mr Koosiram Conhye; several eminent personalities; and representatives from the public sector were present.

In his address, Minister Hurdoyal highlighted that the Day is an occasion to recognise and valorise the vital role of the public service in transforming societies and improving the lives of citizens.

The public service, he stated, has always been at the forefront of the socio-economic progress of the country and has been paving the way forward for a resilient and inclusive future in the face of challenges such as the COVID-19 pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine war.

He lauded the proactive and swift response of public health officers and the collaboration between various governmental institutions for successfully managing the COVID-19 crisis.

The country, he said, is on the path of recovery and the role of public officers has become even more essential in terms of planning, resource allocation, service delivery, and transformation.

“It is imperative that the public service seizes the opportunities presented by disruptive technologies to build a resilient and agile public service to meet the needs of society and ensure a citizen-centric public service delivery”, stated the Minister.

He further underlined Government’s vision for a greener and sustainable public sector which caters to the impacts of climate change while leveraging on cutting-edge technologies.

On this note, Minister Hurdoyal urged more and more youth to join the public service and make a difference through their technological savoir-faire and competencies for a sustainable and resilient future.

As for the UN Resident Coordinator to Mauritius and Seychelles, Mrs Lisa Simrique Singh, she spoke of the power of technology and digitalisation in developing effective services to people, mobilising resources and improving business efficiency in the public service.

The Day, she said, provides an opportunity to pay tribute to all public officers and to accelerate actions towards achieving Sustainable Developmental Goals.

She reiterated the UN’s support to continue to assist Mauritius in its endeavour to promote digital transformation and ensure effective service delivery to citizens.

For his part, Mr Koosiram Conhye indicated that the digital transformation of the public sector has become a must in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine war.

The workshop, he added, offers a platform for all public officers to brainstorm and come up with ideas to better transform the public service and provide solutions that are more inclusive and sustainable.
