Africa-Press – Mauritius. The second edition of the Agricultural Science Exchange Forum (ASEF 2) being held from 12 to 13 October on the theme “Transforming Agrifood Systems through Research and Innovation for Resilience”, opened, today, in Reduit in presence of the Minister of Agro Industry and Food Security, Mr Teeruthraj Hurdoyal.
The Executive Director of the Mauritius Research and Innovation Council (MRIC), Professor Bahorun, the Acting Chief Executive of the Food and Agriculture Research and Extention Institute (FAREI), Mrs Micheline Seenevassen Pillay and other personalities were also present.
In his address, Minister Hurdoyal indicated that the Forum is an appropriate platform to advance sustainability, adaptability and resilience in the sector through knowledge exchange collaboration, and the adoption of cutting-edge technologies to shape the future of the agricultural sector.
The challenges faced by the agrifood systems and the necessity to find solutions was underlined by the Minister. He underscored that ASEF 2 will explore the pivotal role of research and innovation in advancing the resilience of agrifood systems.
“In a rapidly changing world, and in the face of climate change, resource constraints and shifting consumer preferences, it has become increasingly important to harness the power of science and innovation to ensure the sustainability, productivity, and adaptability of agrifood systems,” he said.
He further highlighted that investing in research and development coupled with innovative technologies like AI are instrumental to address challenges faced by the sector, optimise resources, and meet the changing needs of evolving consumer preferences while mitigating the effect of climate change by developing climate resilient crops.
It is also critical in developing sustainable farming practices that optimize resource, reduce environmental impact, and enhance resilience of agrifood systems, he pointed out.
Speaking on new innovating technologies, he indicated that data driven approach can help planters to make informed decisions about irrigation, fertilisation and pest control, resulting in increased efficiency and reduce resource wastage.
The Minister expressed optimism that continuous innovation can build a sustainable, productive, and adaptable food system and at the same time ensure food security for all amid current and future challenges.
For his part, Professor Bahorun gave an overview of the key roles and roadmap of the MRIC highlighting that it is primordial to turn to circular green economy; innovate existing incentives; and work together with the private sector to stir new opportunities and developments in agriculture.
The Forum is an initiative of FAREI with the objective to provide a dynamic platform for researchers, agricultural extensionist, practitioners, and industry experts to engage in robust discussions, exchange innovative ideas, and foster collaborations that will shape the future of agrifood systems.
