The Minister of Social Integration, Social Security and National Solidarity, Mrs Fazila Jeewa-Daureeawoo, received, yesterday at the Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport, a delegation of the Special Olympic World Games which were held Berlin, Germany, from 17 to 25 June 2023.
A delegation comprising 23 athletes with intellectual disabilities with low ability levels have been selected by Special Olympics Mauritius to participate in the prestigious Games.
Two athletes were from Rodrigues. The Special Olympics Mauritius Team has won 12 Medals as follows: powerlifting (6); athletics (3); bocce (1); basketball (1); and futsal (1).
A total of two gold medals in athletics and basketball, five silver medals in powerlifting, bocce and athletics, and five silver medals in powerlifting, athletics and futsal have been won by the athletes.
Special Olympic World Games Special Olympics is the world’s largest humanitarian sporting organisation and a global movement which focuses on the empowerment of people with intellectual disabilities through the power of sport.
Special Olympics Mauritius has participated in several World Games and each time, athletes with intellectual disabilities have made Mauritius proud by winning medals and making all citizens of Mauritius proud of their efforts.
