Africa-Press – Mauritius. The Minister of Gender Equality and Family Welfare, Mrs Kalpana Devi Koonjoo-Shah, lauded the contribution and dedication of foster parents in supporting the Government to accompany children under the foster care system in their development.

She was speaking at a ceremony organised, today, in the context of Christmas and New Year celebration for foster children at the National Women Development Centre in Phoenix.

Minister Koonjoo-Shah underlined that foster parents have a key role in safeguarding the rights of children and providing them with love and care. Government, she stated, will continue to provide assistance to foster families through various measures including an increase in the monthly foster care allowance.

In addition, she indicated that the Ministry is working towards professionalising the foster care system for better monitoring and follow up. She thanked all stakeholders and partners namely Active Mauritius, National Children’s Council, and Foster Care Division of the Ministry for their engagement in ensuring the smooth transition of children in foster family and for mentoring them with skills and aptitudes for their overall development.

It is recalled that the foster care system has been put in place to provide an opportunity to children removed under a Court Order to be placed in foster family to evolve in a substitute family environment. Around 100 children have been placed in foster families.
