Africa-Press – Mauritius. The Commissioner of Health of Rodrigues, Mr Nicolas Volbert, met the Minister of Gender Equality and Family Welfare, Mrs Kalpana Devi Koonjoo-Shah, yesterday, in Port-Louis.
In a statement after the meeting, Minister Koonjoo-Shah said that she had an excellent discussion with the Commissioner of Health. She indicated that various issues affecting the Rodriguan community, including the incidence of teenage pregnancy, were brought forth during discussions.
She informed that the Commissioner solicited the help of her Ministry to provide support to a group of Rodriguan women who had been diagnosed with breast cancer, and were striving as entrepreneurs.
In addition, Mrs Koonjoo-Shah pointed out that her Ministry would carry out an awareness campaign on the prevention of sexually transmitted diseases for the whole population of Rodrigues.
She renewed Government’s unflinching support to Rodrigues, and pledged to collaborate and work together with the Rodriguan authorities to enhance the quality of life of all Rodriguans.
As for Mr Nicolas Volbert, he stated that he discussed with the Minister issues that pertained to the health and life conditions of women. Other topics of discussion, he highlighted, concerned Rehabilitation Youth Centres and shelters, amongst others.
