Minister Koonjoo-Shah reiterates the importance of promoting tradition and culture within society

Africa-PressMauritius. A cultural event on the importance of wearing sarees in the Indian Community, organised by the Saree Speaks Association of Mauritius, kicked off, this evening, at Le Suffren Hotel & Marina, Caudan, Port-Louis.

The Minister of Gender Equality, Child Development and Family Welfare, Mrs Kalpana Koonjoo-Shah, Lady Sarojini Jugnauth, as well as other personalities were present.

In a statement after the event, Mrs Koonjoo-Shah highlighted the importance of preserving and fostering cultural values both at individual and collective levels.

This event, she pointed out, is a good initiative to promote cultural interaction among different cultural people within the country and abroad for mutual understanding and enrichment.

As regards the Saree Speaks Association, the Minister underlined that this group not only encourages and promotes saree wearing but also helps in the revival of tradition and culture which is slowly fading away.

Saree Speaks Association
Founded by influencer Vini Tandon Keni in April 2016, Saree Speak is a platform for women across the world to share their saree stories, and inspire people to drape the six yards, or nine yards, not just for occasions and formal functions.

The group also inspires and motivates women to wear sarees and post pictures along with their saree stories. The purpose of the group is to revive the love of sarees amongst all age groups, especially the authentic handloom weaves of India.

The group has played a major role in reviving some almost extinct weaves like the Kunbi, Gamcha, and other Handloom weaves and is a great support to small scale weavers and craftsmen from all over India.

Old weaving techniques, embroidery and art forms are getting a new lease of life through this group. Saree Speaks Association was founded in Mauritius some six years ago. It started with six members and has currently reached 90 members.
