Africa-Press – Mauritius. The 950KW roof mounted photovoltaic project was launched, today, at the Development Bank of Mauritius Ltd (DBM) Industrial Estate in Triolet in the presence of the Minister of Energy and Public Utilities, Mr Georges Pierre Lesjongard.

The Chief Executive Officer of the DBM, Mr Jaywant Pandoo; the Chairperson of DBM, Dr Jairajsing Luchoo; and other personalities were present. In his address, Minister Lesjongard recalled that the project is in line with Government’s vision of achieving 60% of renewable energy by 2030.

He lauded the initiative of the DBM for embarking on the production of electricity through renewable sources. Recalling a key measure announced in budget 2022-2023 for the energy sector, he highlighted that Government envisions to make the green energy sector a pillar of the Mauritian economy.

It will also attract foreign direct investment and create jobs, he added. He further pointed out that small scale energy production is also being encouraged.

To this end, he said that the DBM is providing loan facilities adding that an increase in the request by individuals for small scale electricity production has been noted.

In a bid to cater for an inclusive society and encourage everyone in the production of electricity, specific incentives are available to enable low-income families install photovoltaic solar system on their rooftop free of charge, he underscored.

Mr Lesjongard further appealed to the population for a change in mindset and encouraged them to turn to renewable energies so as to make of Mauritius a cleaner and greener energy-friendly country. For his part, Dr Luchoo stated that the roof mounted photovoltaic project holds significant promise for the Mauritian environment and economy.

The DBM, he underpinned, firmly believes in a sustainable future and has embarked on photovoltaic projects at Plaine Lauzun, Coromandel, Triolet, Port Louis, and the Jawaharlal Nehru Hospital which will contribute in zero pollution, a drastic reduction in carbon emissions, and minimal operational costs.

He underlined the importance of such initiatives indicating that they will contribute to a cleaner atmosphere as well as reduce reliance on the import of fossil fuels.

“It is a testament to the power of collaboration and innovation, and showcases the positive impact that every organisation and individual can have on our environment and our economy,” he said.

DBM 950KW Roof Mounted Photovoltaic Project in Triolet The PV plant comprises three primary buildings: Building A, Building B, and Building CDEF. On the roofs of these buildings, a total of 1,730 PV modules with a capacity of 550Wp each are being installed, resulting in a capacity of approximately 950kWp.

It is estimated that the PV plant will generate at least 1,380 MWh of clean energy annually. The power generated will be injected into the Central Electricity Board grid on the Medium Voltage Side via a 1,000kVA step-up transformer, with no on-site consumption.
