Africa-Press – Mauritius. A footbridge to the tune of some Rs 17 million is being constructed along Port-Louis Central Flacq Road (A2) at St Croix to connect Lataniers Bridge and the existing footpath in a bid to ensure the safety of citizens.
In this context, the Minister of Energy and Public Utilities, Mr Georges Pierre Lesjongard, accompanied by the Members of Parliament, Mrs Subhashnee Luchmun-Roy and Mrs Joanne Tour, effected a site visit this afternoon in St Croix.
In a statement, Minister Lesjongard reiterated Government’s vision to enhance the quality of life of citizens adding that the infrastructural project will bring relief to the inhabitants of that area and decrease risks of accidents for road users and pedestrians.
He expressed satisfaction as regards the progress of works and called for the support and understanding of the inhabitants for the realisation of the project which will span over nine months.
The Minister indicated that the project will also comprise the construction of handrails, guardrails, road markings, speed breakers and street lighting.
The speed limit in this area will be 40km/h to discourage speeding and reduce risks of accidents, he added. More on the project The Nicolay Bridge also known as Lataniers Bridge is located on Port-Louis Central Flacq [A2] Road at St Croix.
The existing masonry reinforced concrete bridge was built in 1932 and is supported by two main mansonry piers and retaining walls. The footbridge will be approximately 75m long and 2m wide with safety fences on both sides.
The project also includes construction of 70m of footpath and drains. The project has been awarded on March 2022 to Gamma Construction Ltd on a design and build basis and is expected to be completed by January 2023.
