Africa-Press – Mauritius. The first Mauritius Fishing Festival (Festival de la Pêche) was inaugurated today at Grand Bay La Croisette, in Grand Bay, by the Minister of Blue Economy, Marine Resources, Fisheries and Shipping, Mr Sudheer Maudhoo.

The Minister of Arts and Cultural Heritage, Mr Avinash Teeluck, and the organisers of the event, Mr Ben Javed and Mr Pascal Leonard, both members of Samurai Anglers, an association of kayak fishers, were also present.

The event is being held on 06 and 07 November 2021 to allow fishing enthusiasts interested in river, reservoir, kayak and big game fishing, among others, to discover fishing techniques, equipment and accessories.

They will also be given the opportunity to learn about responsible and sustainable fishing. In his statement, Minister Maudhoo lauded the Samurai Anglers for organising the festival which is creating a keen interest among citizens to practice fishing as an activity.

This demonstrates that fishing has its place not only among fishing amateurs but also for the economy as the ocean is the only natural and God-given resource that Mauritius has, he emphasised. According to him, much work is being initiated in the fisheries sector to bring more revenue to the country.

The Ministry, he remarked, has set up a stand at the event to share knowledge with visitors about the fisheries sector, sustainable fishing and the work that is being achieved to further develop the sector and projects implemented for the fisher community.

He moreover spoke about the importance of repopulating the lagoon as well as his vision of seeding the lagoon with one million marine species essentially fish, shrimps and crabs.

In the days to come, we will be starting the project of coral culture with a budget allocation of Rs 25 million to train fishers on coral culture, he announced.

Several stands have been set up at the venue and visitors are invited to partake in a Kayak and Motors/Boats expo-sale. Mini conferences on fishing themes, activities for children and sale of fishing equipment and accessories, are also scheduled.
