Minister Padayachy reiterates Government’s commitment to financially empower workers

Africa-Press – Mauritius. Government will continue to work towards improving the financial conditions of all workers in Mauritius through the implementation of mechanisms and financial assistance.

The Minister of Finance, Economic Planning and Development​, Dr Renganaden Padayachy, made this statement, yesterday at the Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Tower in Ebène, during the School Cleaners Empowerment award ceremony which was organised by Mauri-Facilities Management Co.

Ltd. The Chairman of Mauri-Facilities Management Co. Ltd, Mrs Sarah Rawat-Currimjee, and other personalities were present at the event. In his address, Minister Padayachy highlighted the significance of this company for its contribution to keeping our island clean.

It is in this context that the Management of the organisation, alongside the Government, decided to review the wage of the employees from Rs 1,500 to a minimum wage of Rs 15,000 at present, he pointed out.

Furthermore, he underlined that Government considers the environmental aspect to be an important part of development, hence the allocation of additional financial resources to employees and the implementation of several mechanisms in this regard.

The Finance Minister, moreover, stressed that it is essential that cleaning is carried out throughout the island as a clean environment not only benefits citizens but also encourages tourists to visit the country. On this note, he commended the employees of the Mauri-Facilities Management Co.

Ltd for their sacrifice, dedication, and participation in the cleaning and embellishment of the island through, amongst others, the painting of the school facades around the island and, regular cleaning of the roads and motorways.

Dr Padayachy also dwelt on recent initiatives toward boosting the purchasing power of employees, namely: the revision of the National Monthly Minimum Wage to Rs 15,000; the implementation of the monthly Contribution Sociale Généralisée (CSG) allowance of Rs 2,000 to bring the Guaranteed Minimum Revenue at Rs 17,000 and; the tripartite meeting to determine the compensation rate for the year 2024.

For her part, Mrs Rawat-Currimjee elaborated on the six years of existence of Mauri-Facilities Management Co. Ltd and its expansion from offering cleaning services to Government schools to becoming a national environment cleaning authority in Mauritius.

On this score, she lauded the remarkable work of the employees of the company, the collaboration with the Ministry of Education, Tertiary Education, Science and Technology, and, the support from the Ministry of Finance, Economic Planning, and Development as regards the success of this organisation.
