Africa-Press – Mauritius. The Minister of Environment, Solid Waste Management and Climate Change, Mr Kavydass Ramano, attended, on 14 October 2023, the opening ceremony of ‘La Foire Anti-Gaspillage’, at the Municipal Council of Quatre Bornes.

The objective of this two-day event, organised by the Ministry of Environment, Solid Waste Management and Climate Change in collaboration with the Municipal Council of Quatre Bornes, was to engage and sensitise the public at large on the 9Rs of circular economy.

Around 40 exhibitors, comprising Small and Medium Enterprises, local manufacturers, importers, recyclers, and Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) participated in the event.

The Parliamentary Private Secretary, Mrs Tania Diolle; the Lord Mayor of Quatre Bornes, Mr Dooshiant Ramluckhun; and other personalities were also present for the opening ceremony.

In his address, Minister Ramano outlined the principles of the 9Rs that embody the circular economy namely, Refuse, Rethink, Reduce, Reuse, Repair, Refurbish, Repurpose, Recycle and Recover.

He highlighted that this market fair will serve as a platform to enable citizens to discover these 9Rs and yield solutions to value our resources and avoid wastage.

He stated that the aim of his Ministry is to educate the citizens and encourage them into adopting the principles of circular economy in their daily lives, be it at home, at work, within organisations and clubs or at individual level.

He, moreover, recalled that the transition towards circular economy is a national initiative driven by the Ministry, in collaboration with the private sector, the civil society and other stakeholders.

Furthermore, Minister Ramano recalled that his Ministry has devised a 10-year action plan in order to implement circular economy and reinforce the country’s economic situation while protecting the environment, using minimum resources and avoiding wastage.

He also stressed on the need to preserve our limited resources following the COVID-19 pandemic outbreak, which stimulated global disasters such as pollution, climate change and disintegration of the biodiversity.

In addition, the Environment Minister appealed to the youth to enrol for training sessions proposed by the Mauritius Institute of Training and Development (MITD) on plumbing and carpentry, amongst others.

He acknowledged the presence of the NGOs, the University of Mauritius, the University of Technology, Mauritius, the MITD, and other organisations which participated in ‘La Foire Anti-Gaspillage’ with the aim of motivating citizens and inculcating them with a broader and eco-friendly mindset.
